Pilates is essentially a mind-body centring technique which highlights starting a movement from a central core of stability – lumbo-pelvic region. From this, Pilates works by adjusting each exercise intensity through using different limb movements and resistance, combined with breathing control to progress towards functional fluid movements. In other words, the system of Pilates exercises helps to strengthen and stretch the body, improving tone, posture and balance. This in turn trains natural, correct and efficient movement.
The Pilates courses at PhysioFixx are instructed by fully qualified Chartered Physiotherapists who have been trained through the Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institue (APPI). The classes are for 1 hour and run in blocked of 6 or 10 weeks. Each participant will have a Pilates assessment and tutorial prior to attending the class. The assessment is vital t enable us to understand any health issues, your goals, muscular imbalances. The tutorial is vital as it helps you to understand the anatomy, how to engage the correct muscles, set your posture and how to use the correct breathing technique, which forms the basis of the 5 key elements:
- Ribcage placement
- Shoulder bade placement
- Head and neck placement
This is so important as it ensures and enables you to get the most out of each of your class sessions. Each of the Pilates classes has a small number of participants as this allows the physiotherapist to give you the attention you need for the specific level you are working at.
